Watchlist 8-22-2014 – $JRJC, $DGLY, $FREE, $AMCF

Well I don’t see that much too exciting today, AND I’m back to sitting in the front seat of my truck trying to trade sitting outside the Whitefish Community Center in Paradise, MI. The wifi actually works pretty well, one of the better connections I’ve had this trip, but damn, my neck already hurts 45 minutes in.

Its also the last full day of the trip so I’m most likely gonna mail it in trading wise and spend some time fishing and checking out the outdoors.  Tahquamenon Falls

Plus Yellen is speaking at 10AM, I have no idea about what, but it will probably make the market do some wacky shit. I’m green on the week so no point in trying to trade against these headwinds.

Watchlist 8-21-2014 – $DGLY, $JRJC, $TASR, $HGSH, $COYN, $MOBI,

$COYN, my sole amazing long pick, I added this just because it came up and solely based on the name. I’m assuming it may move based on Ferguson.

Todays Trading Plan:

Struggling with trading half days this week. I’ve made pretty decent trades, but have rushed them to get out by noon. My primary focus is $JRJC, either a hard move to $10 or a crack under $9.15. Secondary watch is $DGLY, over under $6.50. Other than that, I’m going to push to not trade today unless it is just to good to miss. Tired of mediocre setups this week.

Traveling Part Time Trader – Day 9 Summary

Photo Aug 19, 3 48 43 PM

This update is for 8/19/2014.

Not much to report for today, lots and lots of rain, lots and lots of challenges getting connectivity and nothing too great trades wise.

I don’t have enough bandwidth to upload pictures so I only managed to post one spooky one of the lighthouse Garrison was fishing at.

I traded $ACHN and $MNKD this morning for a total of like $350 bucks. So bummer is only up $350 in two days, but there was no wifi anywhere nearby except a ranger station that I would have had to sit outside at. Considering the rain, not sure if my laptop would have enjoyed that.

I managed to trade via a pretty decent 4G tethered phone, but its VERY hard to go balls deep into a trade when you are dropping packets. Hence the reason I traded $ACHN and $MNKD small, and ended up calling it a day around noon. My connection was decent until the rain and fog rolled in. At that point I figured not trading was the best call.

Again not a ton to recount from today, we traveled in the rain and fog to Mclain State Park, which is a very badass looking state park in a very nice location. But the rain and fog refused to quit. Garrison did get out on a pier and throw some casts until the rain turned into a downpour.

We did have a fun laid back evening in the RV though, we played a bunch of games of Uno and Connect Four and then settled in for the night.

Watchlist 8-19-2014 – $JRJC, $MOBI, $FREE, $BDR, $ACHN

Looks to be another big up day into the open. I told myself to be patient yesterday and wasn’t. Should have been around to trade $JRJC late day, but got so frustrated I mailed it in mid day. Struggling mentally in this annoying grind up market.

At least we are having fun outside of market hours so this trip is still a success: TRAVELING PART TIME TRADER – DAY 8 SUMMARY

Traveling Part Time Trader – Day 8 Summary

1

Today we made our way on to the Porcupine Mountains which is a location in Michigan I’ve wanted to visit most my life. Also a big one I wanted the kids to see before they got much older. It was a long travel day, took us about 3 hours after stopping for lunch to get from Wells State Park to our campsite in the “Porkies”. After arriving we set up camp and pretty quickly ventured off to the observation platform for Lake of the Clouds. For sure one of the more breathtaking natural resources I’ve ever seen. While the trees and water are something to behold, I’ve already got it on my to do list to come back when the fall colors are in full.

2

I had never really heard about the Presque Isle river area, but it may have been the highlight of the trip. The trails around the falls and the ability to get right down in the water was probably the kids favorite. They climbed up and down the banks and Garrison made a valiant effort to fish.

3

Another surprise was the rope bridge over to the island between the falls. We had a good time jumping up and down and getting the bridge to rock enough to get Tracy scared.

4

While Tracy and Garrison sat by the river they spooked a bald eagle. It disappeared too quickly to get a picture unfortunately. Lily and I missed it but we ventured down to Lake Superior, which with the sun setting was quite the view.

5

Today was another rainy day so we spent a lot of time hanging out and walking up and down the shoreline. Garrison and I rented a couple kayaks and took them out onto Lake Superior. I didn’t manage to hook anything, but I didnt have the best tackle to fish a lake like Superior. Garrison brought in a nice sized steelhead but lost it right at his Kayak. I was close enough to see it and it looked to be a damn nice fish. Normally he would have landed it for the frying pan, but we didn’t have a net and while attempting to haul it in it shook his hook.

6

After dinner we packed up and visited Summit Peak, which was a cool hike up the side of a mountain. The boardwalks made it pretty easy, but it was still quite the expedition. After arriving at the top you climb up an observation platform that ends up at 1958 feat above sea level. It was a nice view but way to foggy. I did not even bother to take any pictures because it was pretty obvious they would most likely not turn out.

7

Nice couple days in the Porcupines, but when we come back I’ll plan on spending much more than 2 days. To really see everything the time budget should probably be more like 5 days. But this was intended as more of a scouting mission, so we will be able to plan better next time.

8

Tomorrow we head further up the Keweenaw to Mclain State Park near Houghton, MI. We will figure out the schedule tomorrow but our plans are to check out some of the old copper mines.

Trading wise, jack shit to report.. Markets were up big pre market, then continued to rage pretty much all day. While I can trade in that sort of market, its not the best environment for me. Should have been looking for more longs and I considered buying $MOBI, but chose to defer. Instead I watched $ACHN fade all morning then talked myself into shorting it at $9.58 after it had already came back plenty. Shitty entry.

ACHN

I could have taken a quick $300-400 after it fell to the $9.30’s but chose to hold all day. Of course it ground back all day and closed a couple cents below my short. So I’m up at this point, but maybe $100 bucks, nothing worth even logging in to get an exact count. Not real crazy about the prospects for this short, analyst upgrades etc. It will probably gap up against me. Told myself to avoid these boredom types of trades, should have just sat on my hands all day. Oh well, tomorrow is another day and every day is a reboot of new opportunities!

Watchlist 8-18-2014 – $ACHN, $AMCF, $DANG, $EXAS, $FABU, $FREE, $LRAP, $PIP, $PLUG

Pretty crappy connectivity today so I’m not going to post charts. Decent set of stocks though market looks to gap up big, I’m going to really try to sit on my hands at this point and into the open. My goal for this week is to trade less, and try and take bigger moves when I do trade. Way to much scalping last week.

Traveling Part Time Trader – Day 6 Summary

Hit the mid point of our trip today so it was a day to replenish our stock piles and after a busy week kind of a chill day. Tracy and Lily did grocery shopping and laundry which since the closest town with a laundromat (Escanaba) is about 40 minutes away it turned into almost a full day trip. Garrison and I spent the day mostly just hanging out, hiking around the state park and reading. As I mentioned yesterday there is not a ton to do at this State Park so I don’t have a whole lot of pictures. That being said it is a killer location to sit by Lake Michigan and read and think about altering my trading.

1

Although the week ended up ok, I was really pissed Friday, actually managed to trade for EXACTLY $0 in profits, I guess thats better than a loss and overall the week ended up green. But 5 days of scalping without any great plays had me burned out.

trades

Well I should rephrase that, there were a couple “pretty good” plays and I either missed them or botched them. Biggest reason was I spent hours fucking around trying to trade $GTAT, I’m sure in the end I ended up losing money on it overall. But I would net some small profits and that would encourage me to keep trading it. I should NOT be trading this stock, they are “real” have a deal with $AAPL and just because the price jumps around I decide I want to try and trade it literally all week long. I struggled for a while today to figure out why I was so frustrated after a profitable week. Then it dawned on me, the constant mental energy wasted on $GTAT. I now feel better about next week’s plan. I will redouble my focus on JUNK stocks and avoid real stocks, even if they are moving.

I’ll be sending out the reading list email tomorrow night but this weeks books consisted of.

Wrapping this entry up from the Marina at Cedar River, its approaching dark so Garrison and I are off to try and catch some walleye.

Traveling Part Time Trader – Day 5 Summary

2

Another travel day so not a ton to report, plus again due to lack of connectivity I’m behind a day, actually over a full day behind so it may be a little tough to remember details. I’ll start with the trading update mainly because I’m so annoyed. Anyway wrapped up the week +$1698.00. Considering again I’ve traded half days, taking off at 12 or 1PM I’ll consider that good. But I had hoped for so much better. Of course my intense and at times bordering on insane pursuit of excellence seldom lets me celebrate any sort of win.

Which brings up my number one goal for next week. Dial back my risk aversion. I have been so tight with stop losses this week that I have not ever let any winners run. Of course the biggest reason for that is the locations I’m camping have ZERO connectivity. Including cellular. So my plan is to be in cash before I leave for the day around noon. This has created a frustrating “rushed” feeling that has me covering too quickly when a trade goes against me, as well as covering too quickly even when a trade works. I refuse to be caught in the situation of “flying blind”, yeah I know the first response of anybody with trading experience. “Set a stop loss.” But much like believers in chem trails, 9/11 truthers and Squatchers I subscribe to the theory that crooked market makers will stop you out every fucking time. So I refuse to use stop limits.

Not fully sure how to handle this better next week. And in the end there may be no solution for it, I may just have to continue to bunt all week and hope I can come up with better results.

Camping wise, we wrapped up our stay at Fayette State Park and moved on towards Green Bay and JW Wells State Park. So far even though JW Wells is a beautiful and well maintained park and our campsite is literally on Lake Michigan, this site has been the most uninspiring of the trip. It is a very nice place but other than the lake and some OK fishing there is not a whole lot to do.

lake

But on the flip side I kind of knew that going in, this site was intended as lay over to cut the drive time to Porcupine Mountains. The “Porkies” and Lake of the Clouds are kind of the primary goal of this trip.

fishing

We will head out Early Sunday and be on our way to Ontanagon.

Traveling Part Time Trader – Day 4 Summary

Another slow but consistent day today, got up early and proceeded to my mooching wifi location. The town we are in near Fayette State Park, Garden, MI has no coffee shops etc. So I was forced to romance the barmaid at a local watering hole into handing over their wifi code. Since the bar does not open until 11AM, I sat in my truck for 4 hours. Far from the ideal setup thats for sure, running sprints later in the evening I thought my hips and ankles were going to explode.

1

Trading wise ended up +$750ish, so I’m happy with the day. The trade on $DANG was a complete degenerate gamble holding into earnings. And like usual I botched it. Covered pre market at $15.25, and I was short from $15.80’s I think. Pretty quickly out of the gate it dropped to the low $14’s and then faded/went sideways all day. This morning it looks to be setting up to crack $14, so could have been a huge trade. But I broke a lot of rules on this one and was forcing a trade, so I’ll take the $500 bucks. Other trade of the day was a quick grab on $EXAS falling through $17.15, actually somewhat happy with this trade, it was a decent technical breakdown. I just went a little small. Overall considering I was sitting in my truck outside a bar for a couple hours, I’m happy with the profits.

2

Camping wise it was a laid back hang out kind of day. Garrison and I did quite a bit of fishing, I have some decent pictures but they are on the other camera and I forgot to bring that back to my parking lot office this morning.

5

Lily and I hung out on the beach and I read and enjoyed the scenery while she built structures with the limestone. I mentioned this yesterday, but the limestone formations all around the park are very interesting. And cool to look at, the pictures do them little justice.

6

Before dinner we spent some time exploring some of the walking trails around the park, the kids had a blast climbing out on some of the trees overhanging the cliffs. I’m proud I’m the parent of a couple daredevils but it can be a little nerve racking at times too. I’ll post pictures tomorrow.

3

This afternoon we will head off back west, and move on to our next destination, J.W. Wells State Park near Escanaba MI.  I’m assuming I’ll have a little better network access so I should be back with another recap tonight. Instead of lagging behind a day.
